Heavy Cardboard is a podcast & UA-cam channel hosted by Edward Uhler, a board gaming hobbyist who is passionate about medium & heavy strategy games.
The focus of the channel is on live teaching, full play-throughs, and roundtable discussions of various games. There is no better way to interact with Edward and the rest of The Herd than joining one of the live-streams and being a part of The Peanut Gallery! And let’s not forget the in-depth, long-form interviews with various board game industry professionals as well.
There is also the podcast where in most episodes, Edward and a guest will feature a healthy, in-depth discussion on one medium or heavy game.
In the end, while this is Edward’s chosen profession, his goal is to share his enjoyment with viewers & listeners. So tune in, enjoy the games, and have fun! And please give us your feedback about the podcast, the live-streams, the games, and Heavy Cardboard in general! Happy gaming, y’all!

Well played greg
Neta-Tanka (from La Boîte de Jeu) was the first time I encountered the do it yourself dual layered player boards, with Boonlake (from Capstone) being the first very popular game to do it. I much prefer those myself as well - they just don't warp like the ones that are glued in China and then shipped around the world. Looking forward to the campaign for this one. Gentes is definitely a fun game.
I think if shrey built an express he would have won.
I think so too.
So glad to see Jess again!
Dollar? Shame.
@ 2:17:00 I definitely agree that the production decisions are probably the toughest to work out spatially, not just for what the player wants themself, but also what might appeal to others. You all did very well in not letting AP grind that part to a halt, but the risk is pretty clear. Perhaps a nicer alternative would be the dice dictating the cities as normal, but the production player gets to choose which colour cube... where there is a choice presented. Or alternatively based on the end of game discussion, give the production person 2 cubes they choose, with the remaining ones dictated by the dice as normal, as that seemed to be the 'happy' level of decision making.
2:29:09 Jon taking one more from income i think! Impressive map, I enjoyed this stream a lot
dang good catch. it got confusing with the express link at times. weird to say since its literally only adding the number 1 lol.
What a wonderful map!
Fast
Gonna leave a few list suggestions that popped into my mind while watching. Havent seen the whole vod so dont mind if any doubles appear. Top x games that won you over - to clarify, games where the "Wow, this is really good" moment didnt appear until later. Top x games that makes you wish you were a teenager again - this one is for games that you wouldve loved to have back when you were a teenager. This one I keep on coming back to with alot of the campaign games that are out now. To have all that free time with friends again, oh boy. Top x games that you reluctantly love - Games you feel like you shouldnt love but still do. Top x games where the theme POPS! - Games that either use the theme to great effect for game feel. Or games where the theme makes the teach so much easier. I'll be back if any more comes to mind. :)
I went to look this up because it looks so good, but does it really have a giant second edition logo on the front?
Dunno. Haven’t gotten the second edition.
Pax Ren at 2, No discussions!
Very silly move by the Free Peoples player to attack out of Woodland Realm and leave it empty. However that combat went the Shadow could still have attacked the empty Woodland Realm from Dale. And you really shouldn't be initiating field battles on equal terms as the FP.
Was Churchill close for the 3 player category?
9. Herd Immunity 8. Fake Artist goes to new york 7. Just One 6. For Sale 5. El Grande 4. Kanban EV 3. Tiletum 2. Innovation 1. Oathsworn: into the deepwood
Welcome to Wistar. A dolla twenty five, sir.
Thanks for the fun video,. But no Edward, you are wrong, I still think very highly of your opinion on board games.though My list 1-Mage Knight 2-Roads and Boats 3-Through the Ages 4-Brass 5-Terra Mystica or Age of Innovation 6-Age of Steam 7-Caverna 8-decrypto or cross talk 9- saboteur - something short 10-- codenames or monikers
1 - Spirit Island 2 - BattleCON / Fields of Arle 3 - Maria 4 - The Great Zimbabwe / Tramways 5 - American Rails 6 - Game of Thrones: second edition 7 - Sidereal Confluence 8 - Deception: Murder in Hong Kong 9 - The Resistance: Avalon
For 10 to 20 players… Blood bowl. Yeah it is 2 player game, but i would newer play it pure two player. You need a series tournament! BB tournament where your team get upgrades etc is where this game shine!
Not Stationfall for 9 players?
1 - Ultimate Railroads 2 - Twilight Struggle 3 - Agricola 4 - Concordia 5 - Agricola 6 - Dominant Species 7 - Amul
Kyle and James were good adds to this game. After watching this I am really looking forward to watching Kyle and James play in this season. I am seriously happy that you guys are doing more Oath. I can't wait to see more of this and Arcs. Great video guys!
Thank you very much for the excellent explanation. It's not easy to find for derrocar game. Thanks again :)
Glad to hear it helped. Cheers!
Thanks for the list Edward. My quick list would go something like 1) Mage Knight (not wrong 🙂) 2) Targi 3) Ark Nova 4) Sky Mines / Mombasa 5) Concordia 6) Medium 7) Just One 8) Time's Up / Monikers 9) Green Team Wins
Would've been good if Ed could've got the trading card out from hinterlands discard pile, got the darkest secret and then got the ruin card from world deck meaning he could've got rid of Shrey's secrets before his turn, but I doubt there was enough supply for it, even with the extre 2 supply available (although someone else might've got the ruins card).
Twister is pretty fun at 10
How about Terraforming Mars 3p
I really dig that waiting music. Is it on UA-cam?
Ronald Jenkees. Definitely recommend checking him out. Licensed his music 11 years ago and it was one of the best decisions for the show!
I don't have much experience, relatively speaking. I haven't played anything you list but for the time being: 1. Friday 2. Homeworlds 3. In the Year of the Dragon (Le Havre a close contender) 4. Chicago Express 5. Battle for Rokugan 6. Anike II
After watching the debate last night, I really feel like it would be beneficial to both parties to have any potential presidential candidate have to play this game in one sitting, with no bathroom breaks, no phone or watch, and blackout curtains on the windows. Maybe give them a cup of water and an energy bar.
John Company 2e at 5-6?
More Top 9 lists please.
Made mine quickly before hearing yours 8. Captain Sonar 7. Sidereal Confluence 6. Dominant species 5. Age of Steam 4. Gaia Project 3. Le Havre 2. Agricola 1. Don’t play solo games
I really need to try redux and Automobile !! 1 - Oranienburger Kanal ( i have not played that many solo ) 2 - Battlecon 3 - Fields of Arle (with exp) 4 - Great Zimbabwe 5 - Age of Steam 6 - Dune 7 - Sidereal Confluence 8 - Captain Sonar 9 - 6 Nimmt! 10 - Telestrations (need party pack)
Nice video! But we need a list of fav AoS maps at different playercounts. And more AoS in general. Choochoo!
Whats the glory to rome thing?
Based on the game "Glory to Rome," wherein a player may not have a resource when another demands to take one, and instead answers, "glory to Rome." In Heavy Cardboard, it's a PG-13 way of telling another person "go <fornicate with> yourself"
1. Spirit Island 2. Castles of Burgundy 3. Gingkopolis 4. Trickerion 5. Food Chain Magnate 6. John Company 7. Dungeons & Dragons 8. Captain Sonar 9. 3 copies of Gingkopolis
Would love to see a Struggle of Empires play-through.
Psssst July 20
1 - 2 - Pax Ren / Guns of Gettysburg 3 - Three Kingdoms 4 - High Frontier / Kemet / Pax Porf 5 - Rolling Stock Stars 6 - Stationfall 7 - Zoo Vadis < 8 Resistance
Great Top!
Player Count: 9-Stationfall 8-Citadels 7-Struggle of Empires 6-Medici 5-The Princes of Florence 4-Hansa Teutonica 3-Three Kingdoms Redux 2-Le Havre 1-Marvel Champions
Blood on the Clocktower for 10+
Favorite 6 player game : Rook
1 - Spirit Island 2 - Mindbug 3 - Carcassonne 4 - Arcs 5 - John Company 2e 6 - also John Company 2e 7 - Sheriff of Nottingham 8 - Phantom Ink
10 or 9: 6 Nimmt! 8: Advanced Civilization 7: Citadels 6: Dune 5: Legend of the Five Rings TCG 4: Britannia 3: Clank in Space 2: de Bellis Multitudinis 1: Gloomhaven
You're a true UA-cam gem
Does this game remind anybody of Twilight Imperium?
From what I understand it's kinda supposed to
Almost forgot my thumbs
1:40:30 I see Edward is not a fan of having a lot of ships lol.
